The paintings of Sal Vasquez have a western influence, the artist's
oils are inspired by cowboys and rodeos. After 35 years in
commercial art Sal retired a few years ago, but didn't retire from art.
Although he paints landscapes, Vasquez's obvious loves are horses
and western life.  "I enjoy the challenge painting horses," he said.
"They are incredible animals-very strong, regal and intelligent
animals. "And they all have their own personalities.  And I try to
capture that personality in my paintings."

His "We got'em cornered!" which shows a cowgirl and her horse
cornering a small herd of calves, won a third place medal in 2006 at
the the Grand National Rodeo at the Cow Palace in  the San
Francisco Bay Area.  It also garnered third-place in Equine Vision
Magazines "Horses in Art" summer issue.

A Southern California native, Vasquez grew up near the Arroyo Seco,
and its section in Alhambra dubbed "Artist Alley" because of  the
many artists who live there.  Those artist included Sam Hyde Harris,
Don Miles, Karl Albert, Jimmy Swinerton, Frank Tenny Johnson, and
in the summer months, Norman Rockwell.  Although Vasquez grew
up in neighboring San Gabriel, in his mid-20's he met and struck up
a lifelong friendship with Sam Hyde Harris, and accompanied Harris,
Miles, and Albert on several painting excursions.  "They were early
California landscape artist," Vasquez explained. " That's where I
developed my love of painting landscapes.  " It was a wonderful
opportunity, but I really didn't know they would become so highly
respected in art circles. The older I get the more I realize how much I
learned from them."

Vasquez attended the Art Center School in Los Angeles where he
met movie poster artist Reynold Brown and western artist Don "Putt"
Putman.  "The artist I met and studied with greatly influenced my love
of Western Art," Vasquez captures the Western way of life in his
paintings.  "I have a 'feeling' when I paint, and I want others to feel it
when they are viewing the painting.

"I can't really describe the feeling, but it's there in each painting." It's
just something that comes from within.
